Shell Building History

The Shell Building has a rich and unique history…

  • The Shell Building’s limestone facade and interior office space and was built in 1925 as the corporate headquarters to the Shell Oil Company.

  • Based off the design by Jamieson & Spearl Architects, the building’s half shell shape was inspired and conceived around the Shell Oil Company’s logo. Many of these logos can be found throughout the building, adding to its historic charm!
  • When first built, most office views were of the pillared Saint Louis City Library, Lucas Park, and an architecturally striking cathedral. Today the newly renovated Library offers a slightly more modern view with the quiet park and inspiring cathedral still only a few steps away.

  • Renovated in 1981 to remain as true to the original design as possible, the dramatic two-story height lobby features a European ceiling accenting the arch of double pane solar bronze windows, quarry tile, and fluted oak pillars. The building’s two entrances feature bronze doors and framing and restored bronze elevator doors in the main floor lobby await you.

  • Each of the building’s 12 floors were renovated and the landmark stood tremendously at Shell Corner once again. The custom renovation requests for tenants in the building at that time occurs even today with the flexibility of the new building owner hoping to give businesses exactly the space they’re looking for.
  • “In the Renovation of the Shell Building, we’ve aimed to retain the building’s natural elegance while adding the conveniences of a new building…This is a new building within an old one.” -Mark Breihan, Breihan Construction Company, partner in the renovation of the Shell Building.
  • Come see for yourself how wonderful the Shell Building can be for your business. Your new office will possess a history beyond that of your modern office walls!

Welcome to your new business location in the heart of downtown Saint Louis!
